As bilateral talks are set to begin between U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, and Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, Atul Keshap, President of the U.S.-India Business Council (USIBC) under the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, urged the swift removal of non-tariff barriers and bureaucratic hurdles that hinder market access.
“For years, U.S. and Indian businesses have invested in each other’s economies without a formal trade or investment framework. India currently accounts for only 2.5% of America’s trade volume, a figure that has significant potential to grow,” Keshap stated.
He emphasized the need for both nations to collaborate with a clear focus on establishing a level playing field, ensuring full and open market access, enabling swift dispute resolution, and implementing predictable tax and regulatory policies. “These steps will drive investment, foster growth, and create jobs in both countries,” Keshap added.
